Nympho - V.I.P (Very Indecent People)

Brazilian glam/sleaze hero Criss Sexx is back with his new four-piece Nympho , and if you liked his solo effort "Bastard Barbie" you won't be disappointed with "V.I.P". If you don't know Criss Sexx, expect (you guessed it!) a wannabe Motley Crue act, closer in fact to Pretty Boy Floyd, with trademark long hair and an acceptable amount of make-up. The 80s are apparently back: if you consider this to be a good thing, keep reading...

"Ignited" is an excellent opener, early Skid Row meet LA Guns, powerful and sleazy enough to introduce the band, and it's more Sunset Strip 1987 with "Green lights go". We quite like "You Gotta Love", an injection of simple unpretentious feel-good rock 'n' roll, followed by the first of three ballads, "I Ain't Over You". Loud sleazy guitars are back with "Get Down (Nymphomaniac)" and "All Night Long", in case that LA Guns influence wasn't clear enough. Rain, steps and a "confession" introduce "Resurrection", slightly different, subtly flirting with classic rock. And it's time for ballad number two, "Say It": you're not really sure if it's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" you're listening to, or some Firehouse, or something else... Nice, yes, original, definitely not. "Reason To Rock" is the tenth track, and it really sounds like they're running out of ideas. Doesn't get any better with "Tits and Ass", another tired CD filler, sort of "uh, we forgot to mention body parts, let's stick one more in". The final track, "Without You Tonight", is the third and best ballad and probably one of my personal favourites out of this album.

"V.I.P." is nothing new, won't make it in any chart this year, but it does what it says on the cover, and you probably don't have another quality glam sleaze band from Brazil in your collection. So, if you have been waiting for someone to bring back Sunset Strip, run to the record store now and visit their Myspace, as this may well be one of your new favourite bands. But if you are quite happy being in 2009, despise men in make-up and leather trousers and wonder who still pays to see Pretty Boy Floyd, better stay away from this one...
