Robin Black and the Intergalactic Rock Stars
Teen Crud Combo
For those of you not in the know, The Sinisters hold an event every halloween
called The FreakFest. This is one of the only times they bother with playing
their home town. As usual it was held at the El Mocambo, a club that survives
on reputation alone. Mick Jagger almost brought down the Canadian government
there (but, after all, that was the '70's).
First up was RiotStar, from Hamilton. Imagine The Stooges with two guitarists
andBrandon Lee on vocals. They had their moments and should have had the 2nd
slot. With a bit of work and experience they could be something to look out
The Teen Crud Combo is a band of few words. Unfortunately, "Boring"
is one of them. The only thing interesting about them was their matching "No
Lipstick" T-shirts, the singer having "Bowie Sucks Dick"
written on his chest and the bass player being an example of androgyny gone
horribly wrong: Is it a boy? Is it a girl? Is it Pugsley from the Addams family?
Ahh...who the hell cares. It should have been a three band bill with these non-entities
Next up... Robin Black and the Intergalactic Rock Stars. One word : WOW!
The first time I've seen Pyro at a small club. Robin gets my vote for front-man
of the year. He dealt with any anti-glam hecklers perfectly with quips like
:"Yeah, I'll come down to Burger King and bug you when YOU'RE on the
mic!" Good songs, GREAT stage show, killer band and special kudos
to Kai (ex-Sassy Scarlet) for filling in on bass. Bottom line : these
guys are one giant photo-op.
Finally, the main attraction : The Sinisters. Total chaos! The songs flew by
at an almost unrecognizable pace. And, for the first time ever, I was almost
nervous to be up front. These guys HAVE to be experienced live to get the full
effect. Saint (vocals) threw stuff at the audience. Then he impailed a real
pigs head on the mic stand (a Lord of the Flies reference, I presume). He drank
lighterfluid and spat fire at the crowd. Then he started pouring the lighter
fluid all over the stage and set it on fire. He's either a consumate showman
or a complete lunatic. They encored with The Stooges "I Feel Alright"
secure in the knowledge that they totally dominated. And, no word of a lie,
my ears were ringing for three days (but it was worth it!
